Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a condition in which, thickening of the heart muscle (myocardium) causes its functional impairment. It is a leading cause of sudden cardiac death in young athletes.People with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy are at a high risk of sudden death due to stroke because any form of exercise can cause high gradient in the left ventricle, says Dr. Khalilullah in an interview with Dr. HK Chopra, President CSI (Cardiology Society of India). Alcohol septal ablation, radiofrequency technique, myomectomy and use of implantable cardioverted defibrillator are different methods to combat hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, among which, Dr. Khalilullah shows preference towards myomectomy. While hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a very serious problem, hypertrophy of the heart due to hypertension can be addressed in a much simpler manner. “Lifestyle modification by cutting down salt intake, controlling blood pressure, practicing yoga and meditation are among the suggested non-pharmacological methods to treat hypertrophy due to hypertension. Combinations of beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors and ARBs would also work.”

Handheld echocardiography cannot really replace a stethoscope but it can definitely help in an emergency for ruling in and ruling out cardiac involvement. Therefore, helps in quick clinical decision making and also reduces the chances of doing unnecessary tests.
