“Cardiac diseases are responsible for almost two-third of the deaths all over the world,” says Dr. Sushil Kumbhat, an Interventional Cardiologist from Mumbai Indian College of Interventional Cardiology has taken the initiative of educating and training various junior cardiologists in coronary and valvular procedures. Simultaneously, they are also taught how to diagnose and treat hypertension, diabetes and cardiac diseases. The passing on of education and expertise of angioplasty to young medical students has been taken up to prevent cardiac mortality and provide for a large number of people in need of such treatment. Three important points of advice Dr. Sushil gives the audience are: 1. A regular checkup after crossing the age barrier of 40, including the stress test and treadmill test to know of any hidden coronary artery diseases 2. A family history of hypertension or diabetes mandates regular check ups for both. 3. Symptoms like breathlessness or chest pain while walking must be immediately reported to a doctor, preferably a cardiologist.

Myself Dr. Sushil Kumbhat Interventional Cardiologist attached to various places in Mumbai like Nanavati Super Speciality Hospital, Karuna Hospital, Criticare and Brahmakumari Hospital where I do my procedure of various patients. Indian College of Interventional Cardiology which is mainly responsible and doing the part of education and training various junior cardiologists to do their procedures and expertise in that procedure. Mainly cardiac disease revolve around coronary artery so this way we educate to the young cardiologists through Indian College of Interventional Cardiology how to do the coronary procedures, how to do valvular procedures and what are the other things which can influence and give good results about the cardiac procedures (01:00) like hypertension, diabetes, so simultaneously we teach regarding how to treat, how to detect, hot to diagnose hypertension, how to treat diabetes, how to treat diabetic complications and of course how to treat the cardiac diseases and what are the complications can happen. Cardiac diseases are responsible for almost one-third of death rather two-third of the deaths in all over the world. So to prevent the cardiac mortality we have to educate and we have to expert them to prevent the cardiac deaths by these various procedures, by this treatment, by this management, by our junior and younger cardiologists. So this is the main motto of our Indian College of Interventional Cardiology that the education and expertise to go to various people, various young people (02:00) so they can impart their expertise to more needy people and those who are suffering and their suffering can be retarded. So that is the aim of our Indian College of Interventional Cardiology. The procedures what we call is coronary angiography. By angiography we come to know where are the blocks in the coronary arteries and why the person is suffering from heart attack or from angina. Angina is a cardiac chest pain. So because of these blocks the patient suffers and to remove the block; the art of removing the block is called as coronary angioplasty. So the angioplasty revolves around the coronary arteries and to remove the blocks. We need to expertise, we need to educate young people, we need to do the hard work and to learn the technique and art of angioplasty so that (03:00) these young people can do and they can extend their services to the needy and suffering people, number 1. Number 2, we need to educate for the valvular dysfunctions also, so balloon mitral valvuloplasty is one thing, balloon aortic valvuloplasty or transaortic or transfemoral or transcutaneous aortic valve replacement which is also in the process of development which yet not has come to India, but many cases have already been done all around the globe, so that is also a developing technique which will take place in another may be three to five years of course treating the hypertension, treating diabetes that is also equally important to prevent the complications of as such hypertension and diabetes and also to prevent the complication of cardiac diseases like congestive heart failure (04:00) like acute myocardial infraction leading to LV dysfunction and left ventricular failure. So all these things can be prevented by appropriate treatment and at the correct time also which is very important in acute myocardial infraction that you do angiography at the appropriate time and you remove the block at appropriate time so the LV function or the heart function can be preserved and further morbidity and mortality can be prevented. To a layman, there are two things-one thing after a certain age say about the 40 years of age they should go a regular checkup to their doctor, whomever may be their doctor. Total check up is must especially stress test, treadmill stress test is very important to know if there is any hidden coronary artery disease there so that can be explored and can be treated (05:00) and treated at that particular time-number 1. Number 2, if they have high blood pressure or diabetes or in their family if there is a family history of hypertension and diabetes, they should also go to check their blood pressure and their diabetes as well. Number 3, whenever you have any symptoms like breathlessness on walking or chest pain on walking or chest pain and breathlessness on any exertion, then it should not be ignored and it should be checked properly by a relevant doctor especially cardiologist to know what may be the reason for this pain, chest pain or may be both arm pain or may be both mandibular pain. So these are the signs by which one can detect out the cardiac problem or heart problem and treat at particular time and can be heart attack.
