STEMI India is a hub and spoke process driven cardiac care model from Tamil Nadu which was started by Dr.Thomas Alexander from Kovai Hospital, Coimbatore & Dr. Ajit Mullasari from Madras Medical Mission Hospital, Chennai. It connects a tertiary care hospital with multiple peripheral hospitals

The STEMI India model has been found to reduce mortality by 22%.

STEMI India 2018 organized in Lucknow by Dr. Rishi Sethi, Prof of Cardiology, KGMU is an effort to bring STEMI India to the northern part of the country. He spoke to Hiral Bhat on the sidelines of the conference. This is what he said:

  • " Not opening the coronary artery within 6- 12 hrs of STEMI results in death "

'Mortality from cardiovascular diseases contributes to 25% of all global deaths specifically myocardial infarction'

'If we try to bring the western model to our country it will not work because of the distance, economy, and inavailablity of Cath Lab. Primary, angioplasty cannot be made available everywhere'

  • " Angioplasty must be done if thrombolysis does not remove the blockage "

'The STEMI India protocol combines primary angioplasty with thrombolysis in a pharmacoinvasive approach'

'We should develop systems that work best in the Indian environment. The STEMI India model is an already existing and running model and if we just tweak the same it will serve our needs in the Northern part of the country'

  • " Pharmacoinvasive therapy improves Stemi in India leading to reduced deaths "

'By combining Primary angioplasty with thrombolysis in a pharmacoinvasive approach this model has shown to reduce mortality by 22%'

'STEMI is the single largest killer in India. Even a small dent in mortality will result in large numbers of lives saved'
